The parish of Mitford in Northumberland comprises Mitford Village, Tranwell Village and Tranwell Woods. Approximately 2 miles from the market town of Morpeth, the parish is largely rural with agriculture being the main activity. Mitford, meaning "a place between two rivers", sits on the Wansbeck and Font, and boasts a proud history with its fine medieval church, St Magdalene’s (c1135), Mitford Hall, and the ruins of Mitford castle (c 1140 – 1170). Recorded history starts around the time of the Norman conquest, 950+ years ago. Mitford's village hall started life as a TV hut for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, but now has modern facilities, hosting clubs, activities and meetings. Mitford has a popular local pub, The Plough Inn and the village green hosts the annual village fayre. Tranwell Village is a small hamlet of about 20 properties, including many barn conversions, highlighting its agricultural past, whilst Tranwell Woods consists of exclusive properties in a woodland setting.
